I was the Animal Wrangler for Leatherheads (I live in North Carolina), and most of you may remember me as the guy with the squirt bottle with water constantly hydrating Rocky the Bulldog or holding an umbrella over his ever-lovin'sun-sensitive body! As the 12th member of the Deluth Bull- dogs, that dog went to hell and back to get the job done, and there were times when I wasn't sure he would make it to the end of the shoot (Charlotte). I would feel guilty though if I didn't tell you guys that the REAL hero of the shoot was the awesome extra/wrangler Teresa Montgomery! From casting the bulldog (there were 8 finalists), to the infamous 'humping scene', which hopefully will make 'deleted scenes'in the DVD, Teresa jumped through hoops for me in so many ways. She was always ready to save the day, and DID in our final week. I can't begin to tell you how many times she was willing to change her plans to come to my rescue. This woman was on lock-down standby the entire week or more at Memorial Stadium. I don't know how many times we got false alarms from production to get Washee (the incredible stunt double for Rocky) ready to 'work'. I never took my eyes off her in the stands that week, more than once telling her "get changed into your jeans... the scene is up!"
And finally, it happened. They cleared the stadium and George cut the crew to a bare minimum. Rocky, God love 'em was up first and almost got the scene done. Unfortunately, 'almost' doesn't cut it in this business. So I brought Teresa
and Washee in and let's just say that eight takes later, the deed was done.
I won't be able to describe the details due to privacy issues, but I will say that Washee and Teresa Montgomery are BOTH superstars and I believe THAT ten or fifteen minutes of shooting was a true slice of movie-making history. And, in the end, 'No animals were harmed'!
Thanks for all you did during those months Teresa, and thanks to all the extras who made this an especially memorable shoot.
I hope to see all of you again.
