Going Carbon Neutral - Grass Roots Conference
Ashton Hayes Going Carbon Neutral - the grass-roots conference Most members of the CAfE network will be familiar with the ground-breaking Ashton Hayes Going Carbon Neutral project in which a small Cheshire village (population 1000), aims to become the first small community in England to achieve carbon neutral status (www.goingcarbonneutral.co.uk). This project has generated significant levels of interest and publicity and has already inspired many other communities to follow suit. It has also influenced Chester City Council's decision to provide a personal carbon-reduction pathway to all residents. In response to this rising public profile, and in order to promote the concept of local action for tackling climate change, the project organisers have taken the bold and exciting step of preparing a Going Carbon Neutral grass roots conference Saturday 14 April 2007 at the University of Chester. The day is aimed at people who are active in their community such as teachers, parish councillors, community leaders, committed residents etc - who wish to contribute to the global challenge to tackle climate change. It will be an inspirational day for the village of Ashton Hayes and other communities and groups from around the UK to share their experiences and knowledge, a chance to learn about grass-roots approaches to climate change that make a real difference and an opportunity to meet and network with like-minded people. All attendees will receive a Carbon Neutral toolkit, produced by the University of Chester. After the conference there will be an opportunity to join the villagers of Ashton Hayes for a post conference celebration in the village itself. The cost of the conference is £40 for organizations and £35 for individuals and includes lunch, refreshments, a carbon neutral toolkit, and transport to and attendance at the (optional) post-conference party. Dear Helen - thank you for pointing this out. I have noticed it myself on the Ashton Hayes website and have now e-mailed those on my list with this info. I have booked myself on and it looks like someone from Sustainable Youlgrave may come too. I would think it worth while for several members of the communities in this area to go so we shall see who fancies it. |
