Taking Stock: How do you Encourage Literacy Skills in your own classroom?
7) How do you encourage literacy skills in your own classroom?
I hope that I can create a classroom environment that is safe, comfortable and community-like. In doing so, I hope to make it apparent that literacy skills are always needed, in and out of the classroom, and no matter what subject is currently being studied. Text (as in labelling, writing, and reading materials) should be included in the classroom and students should play a large part of the sharing of information and text at all times. My giving my students loads of experience with different types of materials, I hope that literacy skills become parts of my students’ automatic arsenal of skills.

End of Class Reflection
I still believe that creating a safe and comfortable environment with a variety of text and text opportunities is key to encouraging literacy skills.
I also think that being enthusiastic about reading and exploring new ideas and topics will encourage students to try new things and books.
I hope to have a large and always growing classroom library with a wide variety of books- fiction, nonfiction, poetry, humour, fantasy, activity, mystery, and more. I would also encourage students to review and recommend books for the library and for their classmates.
I would love to have literacy as a base for social activity. Engaged readers and learners love to share (aka talk) with others.
By showing students that reading is much more than decoding words, I hope that students will come to see reading and writing has many amazing outcomes. Books can tell you about different places, people and things and writing enables you to share different thoughts, opinions and information with others.
I hope that I can make subjects such as language arts fun for students and instead of creating separate block of "LA" time, integrate it with other subjects.
Literacy is connected with everything- its skills enable us to communicate and comprehend our environment.
