fretless

Hi Kai

I remember seeing you live with John Mc Laughlin and Trilok Gurtu in the 1980s, very impressive moments.

I play bass guitar myself for only 1,5 year, learning from my teacher Bruno Chaza, in Cahors, SW France.

I'd like to know which fretless bass you play on "Live at the Royal Festival Hall", where your sound is so nice.

Bruno Chaza gets "one" fretless sound, very nice, whith his early Vigier Arpège " métal fretboard", with Benedetti Pus, ( a wonderful neckthrough one, mapple, walnut).

Pity Vigier doesn't build these no more, without graphit reinforcement, so these early ones are difficult to find nowadays. (don't tell anybody!!)

At that time, I can't wait for 3 months, for a Hot Wire Vintage Bass 5low B; alder body, natural finish, Ebony fingerboard, mandolin frets, Hot Wire Pickups, passive;

I'd like to find a nice fretless.

For your polit topic, I feel that I like how art performing moves society for the best, by itself, said or not said, do your best as you feel.

Best wishes,
Sylvain

Re: fretless

Hello Sylvain

Playing Fretless is a very individual topic.
Not everybody likes the same tone.
On Live @ the Royal Festival Hall I play a double neck 5 string "schack" bass from Germanay.
I no longer have it because it's enormous weight caused be some serious back problems.
Now I play a peter coura fretless from Frankfurt Germany.
A good way to practice fretless is to program a drone into a keyboard or use a footswitch to sustain a chord. Practice without looking at your fingerboard and your intonation will improve!
Best wishes, and greetings to your teacher,

Kai

Re: fretless and else

Hi Kai,
Thanks for your kind answer, I understand your nice advice for fretless playing improvment.
My quest for a fretless still goes on, but I surely have already too much work learning to read on fretted bass!

My bass teacher Bruno Chaza thanks you for your greetings. He knows about your music and he likes and website forum too. He's prepared an answer upon your " question to all music lovers", that he asked me to translate. I put it there.

He is surely one of the best studio bassist in France. He's made nice books and "play along" whith jazz standards from guitarist Brian Nova. his website is http://www.brunochaza.com

We would like to welcome you, if you can drop a line on his bass forum http://www.brunochaza.com/data/forum/index.php

Have a look there on Tony Cimorosi's topic "What do you think the responsibility of the artist is in soc". This one is close to your's.
Best regards
Sylvain

Re: fretless

Hi kaï,

Finally this automn, I found the fretless I searched for one year: As I told you it is a used Vigier Arpège fretless with metal fretboard and I picked it up after 900 km drive.

It is so nice,… nearly mint, I had the warped bridge to change so I went at Vigier's factory.

This bass is an early one built by Vigier (n° 039) before 1985, neckthrough with 3 stringers Mapple/Walnut, body nice Walnut, Schaller machines, Bénedetti PUs, nice active/passive electronics : preamp by Vigier.
Thanks delta fretboard the sustain is amazing, quite upright like.

Other subject :
I tell you there what I already mailed you today:

I come back asking you :
Would you please agree to answer to a musical interview when you have time for ?

My teacher Bruno Chaza and a few bassists (as me) develop his French bass forum mostly dedicated for harmony, music theory and partitions ( he is quite amazing for transcriptions ).
There he just began original and interesting interviews with a few French bassists he likes as Laurent Cokelaere, Tony Bonfils, Emmanuel Binet, Bunny Brunel.

We'd like to send you the questions (in English). When you reply, we'll translate and put in on line.

http://www.brunochaza.com/ the website

Hope for the best and music. Best regards.
Sylvain
