can you make a living as a musician?

Hi Kai,

Fist of let me say that I am a long time fan of your playing and music. I am myself an aspiring bassist and will commit myself to the music program of a college soon. However when I tell people about it, the most common reactions are “Music? What can you do with that?”, “How can you make a living of that?”, “With that you wont even be able to feed yourself.” and the list goes on. I am very passionate and hard working when it comes to music (which I think are needed when someone is planning to make it his profession) however hearing all those things as mentioned above so frequently DOES penetrate you and has an affect. Often my answer to that is that the goal is not to become rich, but instead your profession and continues learning and the blessing to be able to play music should be the major reward. However of course in these times and society one has to have a financial basis to be able to live and probably also to aid to some kind of emotional stability. So my question to you is, what are your thoughts regarding this topic and where do you see the future for those who study music? Especially for Bassits as the competition of technology seems to be growing rapidly, will musicians even still be needed? Can you be able to feed yourself as a hard working musician? I hope that you have an opinion on these questions and can share it with us. Of course everyone on this forum is welcome to participate.

All the Best,

Chris.

Re: can you make a living as a musician?

Hello Chris,

Your concerns are well founded. The facts are the facts. Funding for music has dwindled. Melting away like the polar ice caps so to speak. But there is something emerging. Never has it been easier for a musician to empower him or herself through dilligent practice, careful archiving, relationship building and last not least: internet presence. You can post a song for 99c, and have it downloaded 1000 times and there is your rent. The world is going on 7 billion people. Even remote villages in the jungle are on line right now.
I recommend you pick up this book by Thomas L. Friedman called "the world is flat"
It best explanins how all our concerns are a reflection of the world markets problems. It boils down to environmental degredation being the prime fear factor. Everything artificially infalted comes down eventually and we are in a position of figuring out what to do about it all. A social revolution is what I support. Passion and Compassion. Music is always in the peoples hearts it will never die. It is the most stable in an instable kind of way. I am able to provide for a family of 4 and I feel blessed for that. I can not give you a blanket recommendation here. It all depends on who you are, what drives you, and what your means and contacts are. One thing I will say is this. Follow your heart and back yourself up 100 per cent when the going gets tough. Do not burn bridges but at the same time let people know where you stand. Keep your day job until your night job pays.
