gun advice

Hey you all, my grandson is interested in IDPA. I used to shoot some but need current ideas about the most "cost effective" way of shooting IDPA. I'm guessing 9mm and maybe a Springfield Armory XD but I'm open to suggestions! Thanks.

Re: gun advice

Jerry,
Unless you have an inside scoop on free ammo or reloading components 9mm is absolutely the caliber to go even if you reload. The cost of components has gone through the roof. To give you an example, 230g 45 bullets are now around $50 more for 1000 than 124g 9mm. The brass is plentiful for 9mm as is the ammo and it's cheaper.

As far as a gun, if your're looking for out of the box reliability I recommend- in 9mm and in order of preference: A Glock, SA XD or S&W M&P.

The Glock 34 is as reliable as a hammer and of the 3 it is the only one that is a competition gun. It was literally made for this kind of sport. This gun will be ready to race as purchased. They run $620 new but can be purchased for around $500 used. The mags for the Glock are by far the cheapest of the 3 and you will need at least 3 to start, more mags makes it a lot easier-I have 11-19 for all of my guns. No need to be concerned about buying any of these guns used.

The XD is a great gun as well but it's main problem is it suffers from excessive trigger reset. Trigger jobs are very expensive compared to the Glock and mine cost $120 each. After they were done (by Rich Dettonhouser-the best guy) they were immensely improved but still longer than the Glock is from the factory! This is the only reason I am shooting Glocks now.

The M&P is a very good gun almost copying the Glock in design but I've seen too many malfunctions in matches?? to feel real comfortable with recommending one.If you do get one make sure it is sans the mag disconnect. It should say "This gun will fire without the mag in it" or something to that effect on it. Several that I've shot and handled had decent triggers from the box.

IMHO he would be best served with a Glock 34 (or 17) with the 34 on a high priority. The mags cost about 1/2 as much as the other 2 and it was the most popular gun at this years IDPA Nationals. You will see tons of them in matches anywhere you go.

If you have any questions email me or look me up at our NCRR IDPA matches. I'm one of the RO's and I usually shoot towards the end and help tear down.
