Can anyone date my Hagström III?

Hello. I just recently started playing around on a Hagström III and I love it. Unfortunately, it's highly corroded inside, so I can't hear it through an amp. I've been researching it, and I hope to fix it someday. The serial number is 656736. Any information you can share will be highly appreciated.

Its a 65-66 model, they made 1000 in that batch.
You can find schems here...

Re: Can anyone date my Hagström III?

Hey. It's been a while since I made the thread, but thank you very much for your info... My friend brought over a guitar and an amp he was borrowing and we played around with it for a while, and later that night I got an itch to mess with my Hagstrom... I'd been playing it quietly for a while, practicing riffs, and I really wished I could hear it through an amp... So, that night, I removed the strings, opened up the body and took a voltmeter to all of the connections... Everything was connected, and nothing was corroded. I hadn't known for sure that it was corroded, but that's what an owner of a music store told me, after it stayed with him for a few days... He said he'd open it up and check if he could fix it, but I don't think he really looked because after I checked around the pickups in the main compartment, I unscrewed the jack port and the first thing I saw was one, unconnected wire... I soldered it in place and tried to get to sleep, so I could plug it into my friend's amp the next day. The next day, I put one string back on it just to test it, and put a couple of the screws back in place so it would hold together long enough to test... I plugged it into my friend's amp and strummed the 6th string (The only one on it.) and we didn't hear anything... So I strummed louder, and then my friend picked up the amp and put it to his ear, and I did the same, and you could barely hear it... So I played around with the switches and the pot, and got it to work... I was very very happy. Now it's been about a week since then and I just got an amp of my own a couple of days ago... I love the sound of the Hagstrom III... But I could be biased... It is my first electric guitar... The switches are a little sticky but I just put some contact cleaner on them 30 minutes ago, and I'm about to test them out. Thanks again for the info.

Re: Can anyone date my Hagström III?

Thanks. The contact cleaner fixed the 100% fixed the Top switch, and the mute switch, and the bridge pickup switch. The neck and middle pickups are still a little sticky sometimes, then other times they work like new... When I put the contact cleaner on the switches, I did it from the outside of the guitar, since I didn't want to take the strings off again, but I'm going to get some new strings soon and before I put them on, I'll open the guitar up and spray the switches directly. If anyone wants some pictures, I can take some.

Re: Can anyone date my Hagström III?

Yep contact cleaner works a treat. Gotta be careful with those old hag switches though- as the top wears down over time the spring/ball bearing combo can actually break out through the top of the switch. I've two Hagstrom IIIs, one with original switches rescued and repaired from both guitars, and one with all the switches replaced with Fender Jaguar style switches. These work and fit great, but aren't as nice to the touch as the proper hagstrom ones :-)

Is your on/off switch wired-up? I used to love accidently hitting this when I gigged these guitars!

Re: Can anyone date my Hagström III?

No, the On/Off switch doesn't work, but at least it's always on instead of off. When I take the strings off again I'll take a closer look at the switch... The first time my goal was to make the guitar work, now I can worry about things like that. I'm going to take some pictures and put them on a server today. I'll reply again when they're up. Oh, and about the ball bearing going through the switch, I didn't know about that when I cleaned the switches, but just last night I was reading the Haskin's Hagstroms website and saw the pictures of a blown out switch... I'm going to be much more careful next time, even though my switches didn't get any damage from the contact cleaner. The cleaner said 'Safe on plastic' but I'm not going to put all of my trust in that.

Okay, I took some pictures. Excuse my dirty couch. (Lots of pets.)

All 35 pictures are in a .zip here:

If you don't want to download the .zip, you can just look at this picture.

Re: Can anyone date my Hagström III?

Very nice! Love those bright sunbursts.

Mine are both a little earlier:

And the swapped switches I mentioned before:

I suppose if I was serious about having the sunburst as the 'original' one I'd swap the pickguard screws too.

Re: Can anyone date my Hagström III?

Wow. Your guitars are really beautiful. I like that in almost every picture of a Hagstrom III I've seen, there's one or two things different. It really gives them their own personality. My guitar has gone from a Flea Market donation to a valuable collector's item... I've got a pretty big sense of responsibility now... I have to see if I can keep it looking this nice for another 40 years.
