Re: my super suede

Is it a New or Vintage Super Swede?

Re: my super suede

If it is a vintage Super Swede the tone should be clear and bright but very powerful.

Some of the new ones have a rather muffled sound and some don't. I haven't found out why but it seems that the newer ones have a brighter tone. I have a brand new Select Super Swede and the tone is bright nice and strong.

Very nice Guitars for the money but no match to the ORIGINALS.

Re: my super suede

Benjamin-Frey,
Could you please list the Capacitor values at the tone pots and switch? I have a Swede that sounds a little dark and would like to figure out why. I know Tone woods make a difference but suspect there could be some difference in the tone caps as well.
Thx!

Re: my super suede

The Select Super Swede I am referring to, has the number 473J100V on the capacitor. That could mean 0.047 uF / 100Volt.
Please note that the pickup covers on this model are removed by the factory, also this guitar is very heavy for a reissue Hagstrom, that could make a big difference as well.

My advice to all reissue Hagstrom buyers, go to a dealer and play one. Pay a little more and go home with a guitar you like. You can buy a vintage Hagstrom on Ebay, but I would resist to buy a reissue there.

BTW the vintage Swedes, Vikings as well as the others are still available as great bargains in my opinion.

Re: my super suede

The vintage Swedes and Supers used 0.022uf caps with the 500k (470k) tone pots. The new ones use .047 caps.
When I got my '80 Swede, it had 0.22uf caps way too big
Put some .022 caps in there, its was like taking a blanket out of the guitar

Re: my super suede (SuperSwede)

Hey Benjamin, how good are you at walking a tightrope... Maybe the original slip of "suede" is what makes them dull.

Seriously, I'm intrigued about the latest new ones. I haven't been to a tradeshow here to see them yet, but if they're made of denser wood then they should resonate better. The pickups were also very basic on the reissue models up to now, making it very difficult to take the marketing hype seriously.

Like you say, the originals still make a superb bargain - with a future ahead of them in value. The new ones may get better, but seem to be moving away from the concept of the originals altogether.

If they sound good and play well, then at least there's less chance of confusion, and no need for direct comparisons when they don't come up to expectation.

Re: my super suede

David,
I love the quality and feel of my Swede. The tone is just a little dark, but admittedly my cheap practice amp
might have something to do with that. I had read somewhere about caps changing the tone, so I wanted info about what was used before I tried making any changes.
My friend is in a Pink Floyd tribute band. http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=87648804&blogID=371927650
(Sorry for the shameless plug!) I took my Swede to practice and everybody liked the quality and action. Try one out! I hope you like it as much as I do.
Peace,
Gremlin
