TO buy or not to buy ?? Viking 1 I think.

I have to opportunity to buy a nice old Hagstrom from a guy I know. Its a great looking guitar however she has seen better days.
I think its a Viking 1, serial #713087, she has the sticker type Hagstrom decal on a Fender headstock, one toggle switch, dot fretboard inlays and some weird what used to be rubber I guess string trees,2 of them holding the low E and A and the high B and E.

Can anyone give me some info on this one ?? What year etc ?

Also like I said she has seen better days, theres some really nice looking hairline cracks on the back which dont seem to be the wood itself but the laquer. There is also a small split on the back of the neck running from the body down to around the 7th fret. Not a open split/crack but like a hairline.

My question here is the guy only wants 175 euro, which isnt a lot of money but to restore/refinish her would it be worth it ? and can it be done ?
Im a little worried about the neck mainly.

Thanks in adavance
Cheers

Does it look just like this one?

For €175 I'd be tempted to buy first and ask questions later :-) Although your caution is admirable. As long as the neck and body is stucturally sound you can't really go wrong with Viking Is. They can take a fair bit of abuse. Tune it to pitch and look for any problems where the neck meets the body- between the neck and the first pickup and at the heel. Check the electronics are okay- I personally hate fiddling around with the wiring of semis, but I've got big fingers! The split at the join down the back of the neck is a common hagstrom problem due to the construction method. If it gets worse, just glue and clamp it carefully.

Re: TO buy or not to buy ?? Viking 1 I think.

Hey Tim,
Thanks for your reply, yeh for 175 euro I cant pass that up :) I do plan on getting her refinished, reburbished. As the pots are really a bit scratchy and she doesnt stay in tune very well. But the guy told me the guitar was 71, and the strings are 72 :) so maybe thats why. Also the tuners arent in real good shape either, will have to replace them.

The link to the picture is very similar, only the one I have has white/cream neck binding and the weird string trees, which arent good at all.

Do you have a idea on what year that makes it ??

Cheers for your reply mate

Re: TO buy or not to buy ?? Viking 1 I think.

Those van ghent tuners are usually pretty good. Maybe give the whole thing a good old clean, restring and set-up before chucking out the vintage parts? That said, I've no idea how bad it is :-)
Post pics, by all means, I'm intrigued!

Some Viking Is have neck binding, like mine here:
