Putting LML PX 150 into 1967 Sprint (VLB)
Hi,
I’ve got a 1967 Vespa Sprint (VLB) with a worn out engine & 6v electrics. I’ve purchased a brand new LML 5 port 150cc engine. It’s got electronic stator & already has an HT coil fitted. The bike is the NON battery version. I think I need:
- an LML CDI unit; there’s 2 on the Beedspeed website & I’m not sure which one I need. The stator has 5 wires coming out of it.
- A regulator; will any universal one do, or is there an LML one ?
- I guess I don’t need a rectifier ‘cos I don’t have a battery ?
- Do I need the Rally conversion 12v light switch (again Beedspeed) ?
- I fitted a new VLB loom, when I thought I'd be running with the 6v system; will I need a new one to handle the electronic ignition ?
- the 12v conversion brake light switch (Beedspeed)
- 12v light bulbs all round; brake light, rear light, headlight ? is that it? is halogen a good option ?
- A Sprint bulb holder because I’ve lost mine.
I went on the Beedspeed site & spotted what I thought was what I wanted, but 'cos I needed confirmation of some the parts decided to ring their order line. I rang from 13:30 to 17:30 & never got through - engaged all the time. I rang the postroon number & spoke to someone who told me they were very busy. Is there another source for what I want ? I don't feel like giving Beedspeed any of my hard earned cash now.
Look forward to any replies
Andy

The Classic Scooter Shop via ebay. They have an ebay shop. It was their guy that made me aware of this forum.

Re: Re: Putting LML PX 150 into 1967 Sprint (VLB)
Well the good news is we got the engine in & it works, but it was much harder than anticipated. Having said that, most of the time was spent installing the new loom which was a complete b*stard to fit:
- started about 09:00 Sunday morning
- took seat off
- petrol tank out
- disconnected loom
- disconnected cables
- connected draw-wires to all bits of loom sticking out of the scooter & labelled them
- pulled old loom out
- connected relevant bits of new loom to draw-wires & started pull through process
- 3 hours later finally got it done.
- with old engine still in place, marked up the sites of the new CDI unit and regulator
- removed old engine
- drilled holes for CDI & reg & mounted them
- installed new engine
**TIP** watch out for cables coming out of central tunnel; fitted the engine & realised the cables had got routed over the crank case, so had to remove engine & do it again
**TIP** fit petrol pipe to engine before installing engine as it's very fiddly to do with engine in place
**TIP** check the width of the bottom mounting bracket of your rear shocker; we discovered that the mounting point on the engine was about 3-4mm wider than the bottom mounting bracket, so had to bend it open slightly; the bolt then is a few mm shorter, so I'll probablt try & replace it with a longer one.
- filled with gearbox oil
- fitted silencer
- connected all electrics (I'd labelled all the various parts of the new loom before we started, using the handy wiring diagram which Beedsped sent with the loom).
- the red, white & green connect from the stator connect to the CDI unit & the blue wire connects to the top of the coil. The white wire from the call needs connecting to earth.
- the black & blue from stator go to the regulator (black is earth on this loom) & the grey connects the loom to the regulator giving it power.
- turned petrol tap on & kicked it over - nothing
- gave it plenty of kicks to get petrol through - nothing
- rechecked all connections - nothing
- it's about 18:00 now & the wives had cooked dinner, so we had a break for dinner & a Guinness or two.
- I remembered I'd got a multimeter so after dinner we measured the output from the stator. Everything was fine to the loom; everything was fine going to the CDI. Nothing coming out of CDI to HT coil. Checked the connectors and realised this hadn't been connected properly.
- kicked it over & it started first kick. Marvellous. Revved it a lot then tried to shut it off. It wouldn't. Ended up having to stall it before we all choked in the garage.
- back to wiring diagram
- it seems there should be a green wire connecting the CDI/HT to the loom; I couldn't find it anywhere, so we nicked a green wire from the old loom, connected it to the CDI & started the bike again. Started fine, so I touched the end of the green wire to earth & it stopped.
- all I've got to do now is incorporate the green wire into the loom somehow & connect up the front/rear lighting & brake light switch & it's done.
- 21:00 time for more Guinness & then bed.
It took about twice as long as I expected, but the engine runs really sweetly straight out of the box & I'm really pleased with it.
Regards

I have one of these engines in my GT and have had a few probs getting the carb set up, what jets are you using? i have a 160 air jet, be3 atomiser and 102 main, there seems to be a slight problem getting it to rev out in top gear, any suggestions?

I don't know what's in it yet ! I've literally just taken it out of its box and fitted it into the frame. When I find out I'll let you know.

Be carefull, mine was jetted quite low and the timing on mine was set to the A mark (23 degrees) where as it should be on the IT mark (21 degrees)
