live bait rods

What's a good rod for downlines? I was watching Hank Parker's show yesterday and he was talking about using ultra limber rods so the fish did not feel any resistance. Looked in Walmart but did not really see any casting type rods that would fit the bill. I am set up now with downrigger rods but curious to see what others are using?

Re: live bait rods

Shakespeare Ugly Stick CAL 1100 7.0 ft Med Action 8 - 20 lbs, is absolutely the best srtiper rod (free line or downrod) for less than $30, available eveywhere, (Walmart, K-Mart, Dicks) These are great striper rods.

Re: live bait rods

I have to agree on the ugly sticks. For less than $30 you get a very good & strong rod. If you happen to shut it in a door and break it you're not out of but 30 bucks! Great strong rod!

Re: live bait rods

I like the striper rods by Shakespeare, only a couple of bucks higher than the Ugly Stiks but I like their action better for live bait fishing.

Where can you find those, DW?

Re: live bait rods

DW, In your opinion what makes the striper specific rods better than the regular Ugly Sticks? Are tips softer, what line class should you look for and what amount of flex is good for live baiting? What Hank Parker stated made sense but I have no idea what to look for other than most seem to think a soft tip with a lot of flex lets the striper take the bait without much resistance. In my searching it seems hard to find casting rods with these characteristics. I normally use my downrigger rods but I do get a lot of short strikes with these. I also use a clicker on my reels with drag disengaged but seems to be a little debate on that subject also. I would appreciate some input.

Re: live bait rods

Jaybee, keep your reels engaged and your strike-to-catch ratio will definately increase. It sure did for me.

Re: live bait rods

I bought mine at Bass Pro in Concord. They are 7 1/2 feet long and have a medium light action. I use the medium action ugly stiks for planer boards and free lines, but for down lines I prefer the lighter action of the Striper rods. Don't let the medium light action scare you, they have enough backbone to land larger fish.

Re: live bait rods

You know it's getting serious when Fletcher weighs in! I haven't used the rods Fletch is talking about, but beleive it or not he did catch a striper once! (just kiddin, me and Fletch are good friends) When looking for a good live bait rod, I like composite rods that have a good back-bone, but soft tip. The rod should NOT bend all the way down to the handle while fighting large fish.(like a downrigger rod will). I stay away from graphite rods only because they are too stiff, and the rocking of the boat will jerk your bait all over the place, kill it and pop your boards off.(and a softer rod allows the fish to swim with the bait for a few seconds before he feels the rod). 7 and a half foot is a good length to keep your baits spread out. It doesn't matter what brand really, as long as the rod has a good back-bone and soft tip. (and I also keep my reels in gear in the rod holder).

Hey Fletch, leave those little Norman fish alone, and come up hear with a few steaks and that silly brother of yours for some Buggs Island fishin.

Re: live bait rods

Mike, I will be heading your way first of May for the Weldon trip and I will be bringing baby brother and some steaks. Fuel cost make Norman more appealing all the time. Where else can you fish a tournament and be 3 ounces from the lead and not even break the top 10!!! I'll be in touch with you, save some for me.
