drift socks

I was curious if anyone in the club used these? Concept looks good but I was wondering about spooking fish and how the heck they would work in conjunction with planer boards and free lines?

Re: drift socks

I use drift socks also known as a sea anchor when drifting for big catfish. I go up wind on long points and put the sock off the middle of the boat to keep the drift horizontal. Then I put 4 or 5 lines out rigged with rounded "L" shaped sinkers called drift sinkers on the end of the line. Then I put a cork and the hook about two feet up the line to keep the bait off the bottom. Any cut bait works well. As you slowly drift along with the sock out the sinkers are bouncing the bottom and the results are usually pretty good.
I myself have not or heard of anyone using the sock with planar boards but I see no reason you couldn't try them with free lines or down lines if you want to just drift around slowly.

Re: drift socks

Thanks, Stingray. I am defintiely going to give it a try. My uncle is a serious cat fisherman up on Gaston and he must use a system similar to yours. He has caught some monsters and he also gets a fair share of walleye, perch and an occasional striper when he uses cut shad. I'm not sure if he attaches the sock to the bow ow on the side.
It will be interesting to see how the wind affects the planers and freelines-will they be in front of or behind the boat? This may be a situation that calls for balloons?
Again, many thanks! JB

Re: drift socks

Jaybee,

I use the large Minn Kota brand drift sock when the wind pushes my boat faster than I like to drag baits. I tie the sock to a cleat in the back of the boat and only let it out about 5 ft. It floats so close to the surface (and only 3 feet behind the outboard), that it will not spook the fish. The only thing you have to watch out for is working a fish around the sock while landing the fish into the net.

Re: drift socks

Jaybee,

When pulling boards with the wind, I put out two small drift socks on either side of the boat, but all the way up front. I let out almost no line, just enough to sink the bag. With the trolling motor moving the boat forward, I rarely land a fish at the bow, so tangles with fish are never an issue.
