Sunday Report

Had a good day/bad day on the lake today. Fished Butchers this morning, one 18# catfish...broke landing net handle lifting it into the boat. Went to Grassy and picked up one 27" striper on a bass minnow off a board, 20' of water with board running shallow, eight pulls and no weight. Boat handling was an issue with the wind; tangled 5 lines around each other including wrapping in the trolling motor...beached boat to remove the prop. Birds were kind of strange, very tight low to the water (50 birds in about a 10' diameter area) feeding frenzy with lots of noise, but always with loons on the water very near them...not sure if they were feeding or what was going on...never marked bait or fish near them...saw this about three times during the day.

Re: Sunday Report

Looseties, it sounds like you’ve been LOONED (similar to being CRACKERED in which an angler throws out crumbled up crackers for the birds upon leaving a fishing spot just to watch boats race over to what appears to be fish pushing up bait). Crawdad and I coined the term LOONED a few weeks ago after the same exact thing happened to us. We learned that the loons push up bait similar to fish...the difference is when loons push up bait, there is a small tight circle of gulls present since there are only one or a few loons. A school of stripers pushing up bait attracts larger flocks of gulls.

Re: Sunday Report

Well then, I've been looned and multiple times. Thanks for the input. BTW, never heard of the cracker trick, but will surely carry some in the boat from now on........just for snacking of course.

Re: Sunday Report

I made the mistake of throwing out a couple of viennas and we were about 50 yards away and all of a sudden the gulls went crazy... Crackers, viennas, whatever...those birds will chow down...
