Lumber is rough sawn at 4/4 which is one inch. It is usually planed to 13/16 and straight lined on one edge, which is what you will find at most wholesale lumber yards. If you buy lumber at retail stores or big box stores it is usually planed to 3/4 and straight lined on both edges and this is why it costs more. The second large tool a woodworker should buy is a good planer, that way you can make all your lumber exactly the same thickness. ( the first tool should be a good table saw)
