The moment Mother’s cremation was complete it began to rain. It was as if gods themselves were dousing the burning embers with shantijal (holy water that brings peace) in order to extinguish the funeral pyre. Ever since, this spot has been one of the greatest centres of pilgrimage. Fifty-one peethas cam up at the spots where fifty-one pieces of Sati’s body fell. The entire body of Sati was cremated at Belur Math. Belur Math, therefore, is not just a peetha, but a mahapeetha! Hail Mother! Victory unto Mother!
