Reminiscences of The Holy Mother!!!

SWAMI SATSWARUPANANDA - 02

It was 1919 and I was about twenty-four years old, teaching in a school at Katihar. I used to live in a boarding house where I met a gentleman known as Aghor Babu. One day I noticed a person clad in ochre coming to the boarding house from Aghor Babu’s house, then under construction. My curiosity being roused by his daily visits to our lodgings, I came to learn that he was a sannyasin from Belur Math who had recently come to Katihar to propagate spiritual teachings. Due to some inconvenience in his using the family bathroom at Aghor Babu’s house, he came daily to our lodging to use the bathroom there as arranged by Aghor Babu. Having a natural inclination for the company of sadhus, I soon made his acquaintance and learned that he was Swami Jnanananda, generally known as Jnan Maharaj. He had served Sarada Devi, the consort of Sri Ramakrishna, for quite a long time at Jayrambati. He recounted intimate stories of Mother’s life and described how her compassion had helped to alter the course of the lives of many devotees. Hearing all this I too wanted to see her once. When I told this to Jnan Maharaj, he enthusiastically suggested my visiting Jayrambati for her darshan during the approaching Puja holidays.
