Nalini-Didi’s Pollution Phobia – 01
Nalini-Didi had an obsessive craze for ceremonial purity. She was always afraid lest she should touch something impure. She was perpetually worried with the thought of who touched her and when. The Mother, however, was not fastidious at all about touching and being touched. It was on account of this that Nalini-Didi was often heard complaining, “Pisi-Ma (aunt i.e., father’s sister) doesn’t mind at all if she steps on even an impure leaf-plate discarded after eating. And the day she asks me to pour a little Ganga water on her hand, I am convinced that she must have stepped on something out and out impure.”
