Mother As I Saw Her – Swami Saradeshananda
Nalini-Didi’s Pollution Phobia – 03

One winter evening, just about dusk, Nalini-Didi came to the Mother and narrated to her in great sorrow, her voice choked with emotion, that she had touched some night-soil. It was impossible for her to have a bath in that cold night. Her sense of ceremonial purity would not therefore allow her to take her food or go inside her room to sleep even. So the only alternative left for her was to spend that whole night sitting in the portico outside. The Mother tried in various ways to pacify her. She suggested that if she sprinkled some Ganga water on her body, or if she changed her clothes and washed her hands and feet, that would suffice. But Nalini-Didi did not agree to any of these proposals. She must have a full bath to be clean. In sorrow and in great pique she just kept on sitting in the verandah of her room, as if the whole fault was with the Mother!
