Mother As I Saw Her – Swami Saradeshananda
Women Visitors to the Mother’s House – 01

It was not men alone who visited the Mother at her place. Many women, too, went to meet her at Jayrambati. They were of all ages, ranging from little girls to old women and educated women of respectable families, married, unmarried, or widowed. Such free movement of women was looked down upon as improper by a society which was very conservative and was still subject to the Purda system. The Mother too was very careful not to shock the sense of propriety of that small village society. But the power of her love worked silently on the minds of people, liberalising their attitude on social practices and customs. “Through the Mother’s grace the barriers are removed and the way is made clear” – this saying proved true literally. The Mother’s influence this led to a new liberalised social mood tending towards the advent of the ideal of comradeship of all individuals.
