Mother As I Saw Her – Swami Saradeshananda
The Mother’s Attitude towards Presents – 07

Many brought her things that were of no use and even proved an encumbrance to her. She would still accept them with great delight. Clothes of various kinds usually formed a part of such presents. Her own need of clothing was very little. The one or two she used were cared for by her so well that they developed no tears for long, and even if they did, she preferred to stitch and mend them for further use. So what she did was to put on these presentation clothes for a few minutes as a token of her having used them, or simply touch them, and then distribute them unstintedly among her devotees or destitute persons. The presented fruits and sweets too, she would first offer to the Master, and then distribute them among the others, herself taking only a bit of them as a token. As regards her own food and clothes, she was very frugal and austere.
