Mother As I Saw Her – Second Part
Swami Saradeshananda
10. The Mother’s Reaction to excruciating Suffering – 5

All the inates of the house collected round her without knowing what to do and casting rebukes at the physician all the while. The Mother, however, did not blame the physician at all. She put all the blame on herself, saying that she did not know why she expected a cure with the physician’s prescription when so many different treatments had proved to be of no avail! It was ordained that she should suffer this way. The brahmacharin was sorry for being instrumental for her suffering. The Mother pacified him and asked him to bring a little ghee in a small stone cup. When it was brought, she asked some cold water to be added to it and the mixture beaten homogenous. After sometime she asked the top layer of water to be thrown away, some fresh water to be put in and the beating repeated. When his was done several times, the ghee turned soft and white like butter. This was then applied to the spot and the burning sensation disappeared. The Mother’s face beamed with a smile, removing all their worries, and the noonday mean was taken, that medicine was sufficient to completely cure the wound due to the blister in a few days. There was no end to the wonder that filled the heart of her son at seeing in the Mother ‘this display of infinite patience’, this capacity to remain unperturbed in the face of a calamity and to decide the right course to follow and , above all, to rise above the tendency to put the blame on others. The ghee beaten with water as mentioned above is a very good medicine for the morbid affection of the nervous system. In later years the son was very much benefited by using it for his headaches and insomnia. It has a cooling effect when rubbed on the forehead. But an excess of it may make one catch a cold.
