ABOUT THE RECORDER OF THE REMINISCENCES

11th December 1988: Swami Saradeshananda (Gopesh Maharaj) (Announced to the Public in January 1989)

With deep sorrow we announce the passing away of Swami Saradeshananda (Gopesh Maharaj), aged 94, at Vrindaban Sevashrama on 11th December 1988 at 9.07 a.m. due to cerebral hemorrhage. On 9th at about 1.30 a.m. he had respiratory distress and lost consciousness, and his right side became partially paralyzed. Physicians on examination found that he had suffered a cerebral stroke and his blood pressure was quite high. However, he responded to treatment and regained his consciousness. On 11th morning he had another serious stroke to which he ultimately succumbed. His body was put into salil samadhi in the river Yamuna.

Blessed by initiation from the Holy Mother in 1917 he joined the Order in 1923 at Jayrambati and received sannyasa from Srimat Swami Shivananda ji Maharaj in 1930. He served the Holy Mother for some years and also served later at Jayrambati as a monastic worker for the second term. Except for his participation in massive relief work in Cachar, Manasadwip, Hingalganj and Madras, he spent the major part of his life in tapasya in different parts of UP and Punjab. Since 1972 he was leading a retired life at Vrindaban Sevashrama. However, he stayed for about one year in 1975 at Agartala Ashrama. He had to his credit two excellent works in Bengali, Sri Sri Mayer Smriti Katha and Sri Chaitanya Dev. Combined in his life a high idealism with practical wisdom, he was a guide and friend to many monastic members. His deep insight into the problems of monastic life, simple and austere life and selfless affection drew young and old to him. He was respected and loved for his sweet nature and loving concern for others.
