Introduction: Women of India - 01

FOR ONE FULL YEAR, from December 27, 1953, to December 26, 1954, India celebrated the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Sri Sarada Devi, who is today affectionately and respectfully referred to by her devotees as Holy Mother. During that centenary countless people paid homage to her memory. Special worship was offered. There were street processions in her honour, and newspapers published articles and arranged special supplements. Meetings were addressed by Governors of Indian States, Cabinet members, men of letters, and other leaders paying tribute to her saintliness. The centenary was also observed outside India: in Cylon, Burma, England, France, the Argentine Republic, in some of the principal states of the United States of America, and in other places of the world. Cutting across the barriers of colour, caste, rave, creed, and nationality, the occasion evoked a spontaneous response among the devotees of Sri Ramakrishna and Holy Mother. Today there are functioning numerous institutions – schools, hostels for students, free hospitals and dispensaries, monasteries and convents – associated with Holy Mother’s name, which draw inspiration from her life and teachings. Yet of the sixty-seven years of her mortal existence, thirty-seven were spent with her relatives, out of the public gaze. And during the rest of her life she was known personally to only a few hundred disciples. Much of her life was spent in the village of her birth. Outwardly it was the ordinary life of an average Hindu woman, dedicated to back-breaking, humdrum worldly duties. This ordinariness – which is actually quite extraordinary – she maintained in her dealings with her husband, her disciples, her relatives, and her visitors. Within a few years of her death this almost illiterate woman was recognized as a rarely illumined soul, the First Lady of spiritual India. Today she receives the same respect as Sri Ramakrishna from those acquainted with their lives.
