Introduction: Women of India - 02

Sarada Devi1 (1 The word Devi, meaning goddess, is generally used by a married woman as her last name, instead of the family name of her husband.) is a genuine product of the Indian soil. She was moulded by the tradition of the nation and influenced by its racial unconscious. The great women of India of all times have spoken to us through her. She is the fulfillment of the spiritual aspirations of millions of Hindu women of the past, and is a pointer to the women of the present and the future. In order to comprehend Sarada Devi’s life, readers especially non-Hindus, should know something of the Indian women who have helped throughout history to shape the ideal of Indian womanhood. Let us consider here, briefly, the position of women in the Hindu religion and society. Thus we shall be able to understand Sarada Devi’s place in India’s spiritual culture.
