Introduction: Women of India - 06
In the building up and the preservation of Indian culture, women have played a significant and important part. Like women everywhere, as mothers, as wives, and sisters, they have maintained the sweetness of the Hindu home and exerted a beneficial influence upon men. In a wider field, too, women have functioned, whenever the occasion arose, in responsible positions: as queens regent or regnant, as administrators, philosophers, mystics, scholars and poets. Whether performing the ordinary duties of home or engaged in strenuous public work, they have exhibited calmness, patience, dignity and other moral virtues of a high order. The literature of India – sacred or secular, written or oral – has preserved their memory since the dawn of history. Out of the thousands of women of distinction, we shall simply consider a few to show the varied nature of their character and activities.1 (1 For a fuller account of the subject, see Great Women of India, Mayavati, India: Advaita Ashrama, 1953.)
