Introduction: Women of India - 08

Sarojini Naidu (1879-1949) was a woman of versatile genius. A poet, idealist, and patriot, she was an effective speaker who thrilled audiences with the magic of her diction and eloquence. In 1895 Sarojini went to England for higher study and was encouraged by leading English critics to develop her poetic gift. She wrote poems about Indian landscape, common men and women, Moghul princes and princesses, the joys and sorrows of man’s everyday life, and about her haunting desire for peace and tranquility.

Sarojini Naidu flung herself into the vortex of India’s political struggle. A follower of Gandhi, she pleaded for the emancipation of the depressed classes and for Hindu-Muslem unity, and went to jail. She was elected president of the Indian National Congress in 1925, and in independent India she became the first Governor of the Province of Uttara Pradesh in northern India. Mahatma Gandhi’s wife Katurbai Gandhi, too, stood always by her husband’s side in his political activities. Her humility, unobtrusiveness, and motherly solicitude for the welfare of others have endeared her to millions of Indians.
