Introduction: Women of India - 10

Rudramba, the ruler of Warangal, born in southern India in the thirteenth century and was trained by her father in the art of administration. When she acceded to the throne in 1262, some of her own chieftains startd a rebellion and a neighbouring king invaded the country. Evidently they belittled the power of a woman. But Rudramba, who had won over the hearts of her officers by her motherly affection, suppressed the trouble-makers.

She ruled for thirty-five years, maintaining the country’s peace and security, and promoted her subjects’ welfare by digging tanks and canals, granting concessions to merchants in order to encourage trade and industry, and establishing centres for Brahmin scholars to foster knowledge. Marco Polo visited her kingdom and wrote about its flourishing condition with particular reference to diamond mining.
