Introduction: Women of India - 12

Padmini, queen of Rana Ratan Singh of Mewar, has been deservedly given a high place in the epic account of Rajput chivalry. When Alauddin, the Moslem Emperor of Delhi, besieged the famous citadel of Chitor, the Rajputs fought against their ruthless enemies for eight months, but finally had to give way. Before the surrender of the fortress in 1303, the brave women, under the leadership of Padmini, plunged into a huge fire to escape humiliation from their conquerors. The pyre was lighted in a subterranean chamber and the male defenders of Chitor watched their wives and daughters, to the number several thousand, marching to it in procession, Padmini bringing up the rear. The women entered the chamber and the door was closed upon them. As they could not live with honour, they died with honour.
