Early Life - 03
The village has several tanks, which supply it with water for bathing, washing, drinking, and other purposes. At the time of Sarada Devi’s birth it was not easily accessible from the outside world. People coming from Calcutta had to walk or ride in palanquins through extensive meadows and by lonely roads often infested by highwaymen. Today one can go to Jayarambati by motor. The nearest railway station, at Vishnupur, is about twenty-six miles away. Travellers also traversed this distance in bullock carts, which took them to Koalpara or to Kotulpur. Kotulpur is about six miles from Jayarambati, Koalpara four miles. Kamarpukur, only three miles to the east, was Sri Ramakrishna’s birthplace. A hundred years ago Jayarambati had no shops. But today one can buy from stalls cigarettes, tea, and a few other commodities hitherto unknown to the villagers. Sarada Devi loved this peaceful and simple village and respected it as if it were superior to heaven itself.
