Early Life - 05
It is doubtful whether any Westerners set foot in Jayarambati during Holy Mother’s lifetime. Because of their association with the British rulers of India, they were regarded with awe by the villagers, while orthodox Himdus, especially of the upper classes, considered their touch polluting to food and drink, and so shunned them. But now many people from abroad make pilgrimages to Jayarambati, in order to visit Sarada Devi’s birthplace, and are greeted by the villagers with cordiality and affection. The inhabitants of Jayarambati, in spite of caste and economic barriers, lived happily as members of one family, the young people addressing their elders by such names as Uncle and Aunt.
The two brahmin families of Jayarambati were the Mukherjees and the Bannerjees. The village had been their home for many generations, and they were related by ties of blood. Rama was the family deity of the Mukherjees.
