Ramachandra Mukherjee was Holy Mother’s father, and Shyamasundari her mother. The father was upright, truthful, and devout. Though poor, he did not accept gifts indiscriminately. Of him Sarada Devi once remarked: ‘He was a very righteous man, a sincere devotee of Rama. He had such a good heart and amiable nature that anyone passing by his house would be invited by him to share a smoke. He greatly enjoyed smoking and prepared the smoke himself.’ Shyamasundari was her husband’s peer in every respect. About her Holy Mother said: ‘Mother was guileless and kind.’ She neatly organized every detail of the household and derived special pleasure from feeding people and helping them in various ways. Many years later Sarada Devi, speaking of her parents’ virtuous nature, remarked: ‘How could I have been born in that family if my father and mother had not practised religious austerities?’
