Holy Mother By Swami Nikhilananda: 032

Early Life - 08

On Thursday, December 22, 1853, the eldest daughter of Ramachandra and Shyamasundari saw the light of day!1 (1 On the site of her birth there now stands a white temple which was formally dedicated on April 19, 1923, by Swami Saradananda, who was Secretary of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission at that time.) In accord with the astrological calculation, she was given the name Thakurmani. But the family called her Saradamani, or Sarada for short. In the course of time the brahmin couple had six other children: a daughter named Kadambini and five sons, named Prasanna, Umesh, Kalikumar, Barada, and Abhay. Kadambini, Umesh, and Abhay died early. The other brothers, when they had grown up, settled in their own separate homes at Jayarambati. Ramachandra had three brothers: Trailokya, Iswar, and Nilmadhav. They all lived together. Sarada was brought up in a big joint family which defrayed its expenses with difficulty through money earned from farming and the performance of priestly duties.
