Early Life - 11

Sarada’s lack of formal education did not stand in the way of her mind’s development. In later years she showed unusual power of understanding while giving spiritual instruction to educated and mature devotees who sometimes spoke languages different from her own. The foundation of this understanding had been laid in childhood, outside school. First, her God-fearing parents and their life of unselfish service stimulated her mind more than formal study. Second, she became acquainted with the spiritual culture of India from the devotional songs of many beggars and religious mendicants. She participated in the religious festivals of the village and listened to the rural dramas depicting scenes from the religious myths to the Hindus. They left such an impression on her mind that in later years she used to quote from them to her disciples. Third, the simple life of the village, the spacious fields, the open sky, the trees and the birds, gave depth and breadth to Sarada’s outlook. And above all, she had, in early girlhood, the rare privilege of coming in contact with a God-man – none other than her husband – who, as we shall see, took charge of developing her mind and character.
