Marriage and After – 02

During one of his visits to Kamarpukur, his mother and brother became alarmed by his abnormal behaviour. They thought that Ramakrishna was suffering from a serious physical and mental ailment and arranged for various treatments, both medical and supernatural. When all this proved futile, they thought up a bold plan: They would marry him in order to bring his mind down to the normal level. Without his knowledge they began to search for a suitable bride. But they did not succeed. He, however, noticed their sadness and frustration. Instead of objecting to his marriage, he acquiesced in the proposal in a rather jovial mood and said: ‘Why are you fruitlessly looking for the girl hither and thither? Go to Ramachandra Mukherjee’s house at Jayrambati and you will find the girl there, tied as it were with straws.’1 (1 The allusion is to a local custom. The stem of a particular fruit destined to be offered at the temple for worship is often tied with straws to set it apart from other fruits.)

According to another story, Sarada, when two years old, was taken by relatives to the neighbouring village of Sihore, the birthplace of Ramakrishna’s nephew Hriday, to witness a religious festival. Ramakrishna too was present. As often happens on such an occasion, some of the women teasingly asked Sarada whom among the boys she would like to marry. With one of her tiny fingers she pointed at Sri Ramakrishna.
