Marriage and After – 04
The day following the marriage Sri Ramakrishna returned to Kamarpukur with his bride. Sarada was warmly received by her mother-in-law, Chandra Devi. But soon a delicate situation arose. As the family was too poor to buy jewellery for the bride, Chandra Devi had borrowed some from a rich neighbour. With these Sarada was adorned at the time of marriage. Naturally she regarded the ornaments as her own. After her coming to Kamarpukur, the ornaments had to be returned to their rightful owner. But how could Chandra tear them away from little Sarada? Sri Ramakrishna came to her rescue. When the unsuspecting child was asleep, he cleverly removed the ornaments from her body, and they were returned to the owner. But when Sarada awoke she missed them and felt upset. Her mother-in-law took her in her arms and consoled her, saying, ‘My son will give you more previous ornaments then these.’ Sarada was pacified, but one of her uncles, who happened to be present in the house, became angry and returned home with the girl. Sri Ramakrishna made light of the incident and said with a laugh: ‘They may take the girl back but they cannot nullify the marriage.’
