Marriage and After – 09

The people of Kamarpukur were exceedingly happy to have their young Gadadhar2 (2 The name given to Sri Ramakrishna at birth; he was called Gadai, for short, by his relatives and the villagers.) back again. They felt a strange peace in his presence and sought his company. His family had practically lost sight of him for seven long years. Now he regaled his relatives and the villagers with jokes and stories, but always reminding them of the need for spirituality. The house became a mart of joy. To make this joy complete, Sarada was brought to Kamarpukur. She was now fourteen years old. She spent six months with her husband and had her first real glimpse into his personality.

To Sarada, as to every orthodox Hindu wife, her husband was a veritable God, her sole refuge here and hereafter. Sri Ramakrishna, on his part, showed her respect and attention. Realizing his responsibility to his young wife, who was completely dependent upon him for guidance, he proceeded to instruct her, out of the infinite storehouse of his wisdom, in both spiritual and secular matters. But first of all he won her heart with a love free from any trace of worldliness.
