Sarada was impressed by her husband’s ever cheerful face. She said later: ‘I never saw his face sad or sour. He always radiated joy – whether he was absorbed in samadhi1 (1 Complete absorption in God.) or in the company of an older person or a five-year-old child. Never did I see him gloomy.’ This innate joy must have impressed Sarada deeply. Speaking about her first intimate companionship with Sri Ramakrishna, she later said to her women devotees: ‘At that time I always felt as if a jar of bliss was set in my heart. It is impossible to describe that divine joy, which was full to the brim.’
