First Visit to Dakshineswar – 03

Soon an opportunity arrived. A number of women set out on foot for Calcutta, about sixty miles distant, for a bath in the sacred Ganges on an auspicious occasion. Sarada and her father joined the party. They started on March 25, 1872. The first two or three days they walked cheerfully. Sarada, out of her familiar surroundings for the first time, enjoyed the countryside with its paddy fields, grasslands, villages with shady trees echoing with the twittering of birds, and lakes with lilies and lotuses. But gradually her legs began to give way. Life in a malaria-stricken village had not given her robust health. At first she concealed her weariness from her father, but finally she was seized with a high fever and had to take shelter in a small wayside inn. Her mind was tortured by the fear that it might not be her fate to see her husband.
