First Visit to Dakshineswar – 07

Sarada always cherished great affection and respect for the members of her husband’s family. Her father-in-law had died long before. About him she once remarked with great pride: ‘He was a brahmin of great spirit. Orthodox to the bone, he never accepted gifts from non-brahmins, nor would he allow anyone in the family to receive such gifts. If a villager gave the poor family a present of vegetables, my mother-in-law would cook them and make an offering of them to the family deity. This made my father-in-law very angry. He had a burning love for God. Because of this love, God Himself was born as his son.’ An affectionate daughter-in-law, she was devoted to her mother-in-law and learnt from her about the many joys and sorrows of the family. Much impressed with its orthodoxy, she said later to a devote: ‘Though he was born in such an orthodox family, the Master had to accept the work of a priest in a temple owned by a fisherman!’1 (1 Rani Rashmai and her son-in-law belonged to the fisherman caste, considered low in Hindu society. A high-caste brahmin does not work under a member of a lower caste.)
