Sri Ramakrishna now set himself to the task of testing the depth and genuineness of his knowledge of Brahman. But he also wanted to discharge the unfinished duties towards his wife which he had begun at Kamarpukur and which had been interrupted by his attention to spiritual practices at Dakshineswar. His teacher in monastic life, Totapuri, when he had learnt of his marriage had said: ‘He alone is established in the realization of Brahman who sees the same Self in both men and women. He who sees a difference between the sexes may be an aspirant, but he is far from having experienced Brahman.’ Totapuri had also said that an illumined seer like Sri Ramakrishna, firm in Self-knowledge, could discharge his duties towards his wife without in any way harming his spiritual life.
