First Visit to Dakshineswar – 10

Sri Ramakrishna began to teach Sarada about the householder’s duties. For instance, in regard to such practical matters as travelling, he asked her always to be the first to get into a boat or a railway compartment so that she could occupy a good seat, and to be the last to come out so that she might nit, in her hurry, forget her luggage. He taught her that in arranging objects of domestic use one must think out beforehand where particular articles were to be kept. What was the frequently required must be kept near at hand and other things at a distance. When an article was temporarily removed from its place, it should be put back in exactly the same place so that one might not fail to find it even in the dark. He taught her how to roll the wick of an oil lamp, dress vegetables, and prepare betel leaves.1 (1 Betel leaves are chewed with spices after meals as a digestive.) he repeatedly told her to fit her conduct to the time, place, and circumstances, and the nature of the people she had to deal with. He asked her not to hurt anyone’s feelings. ‘If you see a lame person,’ he taught her, ‘do not directly ask him how he became lame. You may ask him why he walks that way.’ He emphasized that she should have friendly feelings for all. Once when she was going to Kamarpukur he said to her: ‘Be nice to your neighbours. If anyone falls ill, inquire about his health from time to time.’ On another occasion, years later, the wife of Balaram Bose, a householder devotee of Sri Ramakrishna was ill in Calcutta. The Master asked Sarada to visit her. Unaccustomed to walking in the public streets of the city, she wanted to know how she should go, since there was no carriage or other conveyance. ‘Go on foot,’ said Sri Ramakrishna forcefully. ‘My Balaram may lose his wife and you will not see her? Go on foot.’
