But Sri Ramakrishna, wanting to test his complete spiritual integrity, asked Sarada to sleep in the same bed with him. He often passed the night in samadhi, unconscious of his body. But one night, while in a normal mood, he case his eyes on the body of his youthful wife, sleeping by his side, and said to himself: ‘O mind, this is a woman’s body. People regard it as a most covetable object and are ever eager to enjoy it. But if a man embraces this body, he becomes entangled in the world and cannot realize God. Now, O mind, don’t be a hypocrite. Your tongue must not say what you do not feel at heart. Be truthful and tell me what you want: this body or God. If you want the body, it is right here in front of you. Take it.’ Discriminating in this way, as be stretched his hand to touch Sarada, it shrank back and he entered into samadhi. That night he did not regain the normal mood. The next day, after repeated efforts, he was brought back to consciousness of the physical world.
