Sri Ramakrishna, through this worship, gave a special status to his wife, rare in the spiritual history of the world. Some of the higher religions, such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and Roman Catholicism, stress the monastic ideal. Highly advanced seekers are taught to regard the enjoyment of carnal desires as an obstacle to spiritual progress. Many among the prophets and saints have remained unmarried or, if married, renounced their wives. Sri Ramakrishna not only married but kept his wife with him till the last moment of his life, neither of them allowing the mind to come down to the physical level. Through Sarada Devi, Sri Ramakrishna taught that all earnest women could reveal their divinity and obtain respect and homage from members of the opposite sex.
