For Sarada Devi, too, the worship was highly meaningful. From her very birth she had been pure. Even as a child she used to pray, looking at the tuberose: ‘O Lord, make my character as white and fragrant as this flower.’ No shadow was ever cast upon her purity. Now, at the end of the ceremony, when Sri Ramakrishna surrendered at her feet the fruit of his austerities and spiritual endeavours, he recognized her as a real partner in his life, well matched with him in every respect. Further, by this act he made her the full sharer of his spiritual glory. As we shall see later, she attained the exalted position of a teacher without going through the usual disciplines practised by saints. Whatever spiritual disciplines she practised were not so much of her own illumination as for setting an example to other aspirants or helping weal-minded disciples. Finally, Sri Ramakrishna from now on began to hint to Sarada Devi about her future role as a teacher to complete the task he had begun.
