There were several important events during this period. Sarada’s brother-in-law Rameswar died when she was at Kamarpukur, and on March 26, 1874, her magnanimous father, the devout worshipper of Rama, breathed his last. The widow Shyamasundari now faced dire poverty, for with her husband’s death the regular income from his priestly duties stopped. Fortunately she had a good physique and strong will-power, and she took up the work of husking paddy in the family of a well-to-do neighbour. This hard work gave her a small income, which was, however, inadequate to bring up her children, and her sons later found shelter with different relatives.
