Awakening of Divinity – 11

Sarada Devi was unfortunate in her health. Hardly had she recovered from dysentery when she was attacked with malaria, accompanied by an enlargement of the spleen. The customary treatment was bizarre and very painful. The patient, after a bath, was made to lie down on the floor of a certain Shiva temple near Jayrambati. Three or four people tightly held his hands and feet to the ground so that he might not get away. Then his abdomen was branded with the lighted branch of a plum tree. This burnt the skin and tortured the patient. Sarada went to this temple to be cured of her ailment. She watched patients undergoing the cruel treatment and heard their piteous cries. When her turn came she did not allow anyone to touch her, but lay down on the ground and was branded. Silently she bore the excruciating pain, and her spleen became normal.
