Awakening of Divinity – 13

While Sarada Devi was still at Jayrambati, Sri Ramakrishna’s mother died at Dakshineswar. Chandra Devi was eighty-five years old. Sarada now became worried about the Master and returned to Dakshineswar on March 17, 1876, accompanied by two companions, and took up her abode in the house built by Sambhu Mallick. Soon Sri Ramakrishna was stricken with a severe attack of dysentery. An elderly lady from Benaras began to nurse him. At her insistence, Sarada Devi went to live in the Nahabat in order to remain near her husband. After Sri Ramakrishna’s recovery the elderly lady went away and was not seen again. Sarada Devi said later: ‘Strangers came to Dakshineswar temple whenever the Master needed them, and afterwards disappeared.’ It was this lady from Benares who persuaded Sarada Devi to uncover her face before the Master. She had always kept her face veiled in his presence. One night the old lady took Sarada to Sri Ramakrishna’s room and removed her veil. The Master started to talk to them about God and they listened spellbound. They were so absorbed that they did not notice the sunrise.
