Awakening of Divinity – 20

Sri Ramakrishna, too, went to Kamarpukur many times during this period of his life, his last visit being in 1880. The damp climate of Dakshineswar in the rainy season often told on his health, and he visited his native village almost yearly for a change of air. He also went to Jayrambati and to Sihore, Hriday’s birthplace. Everywhere he mixed freely with the villagers and many times regaled them with his songs and conversation. But people in Jayrambati often ridiculed him as the ‘mad son-in-law’. Now and then he would jump up from his seat and exclaim: ‘This time everyone will be liberated, including Mussalmans and the untouchables. None will be left behind.’ At this the villagers would say: ‘What a madman!’ When village women came to see him he would make witty remarks, sometimes off-colour, which would convulse them with laughter and cause many of them to run away in embarrassment. Sri Ramakrishna would say to those who remained: ‘The weeds have been removed. Now be seated and I shall talk to you.’
