In The March of Events – 01

DURING THE TEN YEARS Sarada Devi spent at Dakshineswar, she lived most of the time in the Nahabat, a two-storey brick structure about seventy-five feet north of the Master’s room. Situated on the bank of the Ganges, it commands a beautiful view of the sacred river and the specious temple garden. On the upper storey Sarada’s mother-in-law lived till her death. Sarada Devi’s own room on the ground floor, about twenty inches above the ground level, was octagonal, each wall measuring inside a little more than three feet, the maximum distance between the walls across the floor being a little less than eight feet. The height from floor to ceiling being a little less than eight feet, and the floor space about fifty square feet. All around the room was a narrow verandah, about four feet wide, with only one door leading to the room. There were two ventilators but no windows. The door, about four feet by two feet, was so low that Sarada Devi hurt her head many times before getting used to passing through it without knocking it. Once she cut her head. For the sake of privacy, the verandah was screened with plaited bamboo mats, which cut off the sun and fresh air. On the east side of the verandah was the staircase leading upstairs. Under the stairs she had her kitchen.
