In The March of Events – 02

In her small stuffy room Sarada Devi kept her supplies and necessary belongings. She also worshipped, meditated, and slept here. Two or three of the Master’s women devotees often spent the night with Sarada Devi in her room. From the ceiling hung a pot in a sling containing live fish, used for Sri Ramakrishna’s meals. They splashed water all night. Often fat ladies from rich families of Calcutta visited the Kali temple. Some of them, out of curiosity, peeped into Sarada Devi’s room. Standing at the door and holding the jambs, they would lean forward and say: ‘Ah, what a tiny room for our good child! She is in exile, as it were, like Sita.’1 (1 An allusion to the story of Sita and Rama described in the Ramayana. Sita was imprisoned in a small room in the palace grounds of Ravana, the monster-king of Ceylon.)
